Career Development Process:
Expectations. The Bren School’s MESM program is geared toward people who will enter or re-enter the workforce upon graduation. The Career Development team is committed to helping place you in satisfying jobs with companies and organizations whose work aligns with your professional interests. It is expected that you too will be committed to the career development process.
Assessment. The Career Development team is able to help you find out what you want to do and assist you in accomplishing your career goals. Assessing your strengths, weaknesses, interests, skills, values, personality, and workstyle is one of the most important steps for developing a life-long career development foundation. Re-assessing these areas periodically helps maintain a strong foundation.
Internship and Job Search Skills. By offering a multitude of different resources and avenues for gaining information and practice (including workshops, training modules, one-on-one meetings, seminars, career speaker series, informational panels, and online resources), the Career Development team thoroughly prepares you for your internship and job search.
Experience. Our students are encouraged to gain professional experience during their time at Bren. All MESM students are expected to complete an internship between their first and second years in the program (with about 99% of students participating in a summer internship). The Career Development team facilitates connections between you and alumni, corporate partners, community stakeholders, and other employers. These networking connections, combined with strong job search skills fostered at Bren, will help you to land competitive internships that in turn will provide you with applicable experience. This experience, the practical skills gained through the Group Project, and the knowledge learned in the classroom will help make you very marketable during your job search.
Employment. The Career Development team introduces students to a variety of professional opportunities spanning the various sectors of the environmental field. They will show you how to successfully locate job opportunities that are right for you.
Transition. How smoothly you transition into your new job and how quickly you start to contribute can have a major impact on the rate at which you progress through the organization. The Career Development team offers their assistance to help graduates adjust from the academic setting to the professional environment.
