News: Bren Profs in The Economist

A recent study on declining fish populations by Bren professors Steve Gaines and Chris Costello is the subject of an article in The Economist magazine and and its website.

The study, which is currently undergoing peer review at the journal Science, usesa new statistical approach to assessing the health of fisheries. Gaines and Costello, who have collaborated on several fisheries studies in recent years, applied the method to approximately seven thousand fisheries thought to represent roughly 80 percent of world catch.

One important conclusion is that the least-studied (i.e. the most data-poor) fisheries are, what the Economist article referred to as "gravely depleted."
