SB Independent Features Hunter Lenihan on Aquaculture
Bren professor says local mussel farmer represents the future of protein for a hungry planet

April 2, 2015

Bren professor Hunter Lenihan is quoted extensively in an article on the Independent's website today about a Santa Barbara resident who runs California's only open-ocean mussel farm. Despite successes over the past twelve years, Bernard Friedman finds himself currently negotiating a tangle bureaucracy to continue his operation.

“We should all be moving forward together in a collaboration to identify the risks [of open-ocean aquaculture], to test for them, and to assess the real scientific costs and benefits,” Lenihan says in the article. “Perhaps aquaculture is a way we can think about streamlining the whole [administrative and bureaucratic] process for the benefit of the environment and everyone else.”
