Profiles in Research: John Melack

Bren School acting dean John Melack's long-term research in the Amazon basin is featured in the latest issue of Profiles in Research, the annual publication of the UC Santa Barbara Office of Research highlighting notable research achievements of the previous year.

Dr. Melack has spent more than twenty years studying the cycling of carbon and other greenhouse gases in Amazon lakes, rivers, and, in particular, seasonally flooded lowlands. He has served on the Scientific Steering Committee of the Brazilian government's large-scale, long-term study of the region, which is referred to as the Large-scale Biosphere and Atmosphere Project, and in 2008 he received $640,000 from NASA to continue his work through 2009.
