Taylor Guitars and Bren Graduate Honored by Secretary of State John Kerry

In fall 2012, Bren News featured Anne Middleton (MESM 2008) on its cover for her work in managing a sustainable hardwood timber operation for Taylor Guitars in Cameroon.

Less than two years later, on January 29, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry presented Taylor with the Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE) in the Small Business category, for its environmental and social initiatives in the supporting a sustainable ebony-wood industry in the west-central African nation.

Cameroon is the only nation that still has a legal ebony-harvesting industry, and Middleton manages the company's Crelicam facility, which has been lauded for its sustainably efforts related to the ebony that is harvested to make guitars, while improving the lives of the company's employees through a variety of social programs.

See the video feed of the award ceremony. Secretary Kerry presents the award to Taylor Guitars founder Bob Taylor at around 44:40. Middleton speaks remotely from the U.S. Consulate in Cameroon shortly thereafter.
