Melissa Van De Werfhorst is the Media Communications Director for the Bren School. Overseeing marketing, communications, and web strategy for Bren, Melissa brings a depth of experience in the higher education and non-profit sectors to her role. She is a trained leader in website governance and enjoys managing website design and build projects. At Bren, she leads the school's communications and content strategy. Melissa is highly involved with a network of professional peers in higher education web/marketing and strives to stay current with the leading edge of digital trends in higher ed.
Prior to joining the Bren School, Melissa previously managed web, print, and digital marketing projects for the UCSB College of Engineering and has been with UCSB since 2011. Melissa also previously worked in community relations for the Community Environmental Council, an environmental non-profit organization in Santa Barbara.
Melissa received her BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, with an educational background in environmental science and policy, as well as biology and biochemistry. She has lived in the Santa Barbara area for nearly 20 years. When she’s not writing social media or website copy, she enjoys writing fiction, and she’s an open water SCUBA diver who has traveled around the Caribbean and Pacific regions.
