Advanced Special Topics in Environmental Communication: Equity and Environmental Communication

This course explores how communication shapes our understanding of environmental issues, and how it can help facilitate equitable environmental outcomes. The course will also explore the role of media and storytelling in environmental justice movements and community-driven campaigns. Emphasizing ethical and inclusive approaches, the course will also cover how to design communication strategies to amplify underrepresented perspectives and promote equitable environmental outcomes. Topics include environmental justice frameworks, participatory and community-based communication, equity-based communication strategies, dignified storytelling, greenwashing and bias, and values-based messaging.
