Bio
Abbey graduated from the University of Michigan (2021) with a Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics and a minor in creative writing. As an undergraduate, she collaborated on a research project analyzing the output of a three-dimensional general circulation model that predicted the climate and atmospheric conditions of ultra-hot Jupiter planets (Beltz,2021). Having used data to model and understand complex natural systems, she believes it is key to telling and re-writing the story of our planet. She is excited to learn more about how data can be used to mitigate the effects of climate change, promote biodiversity, and inform decisions for ecosystem and wildlife restoration. Abbey also previously worked as a planetarium presenter for the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History where she developed a passion for science education and outreach. She believes science should be collaborative, engaging and accessible to all. While at Bren, she seeks to enhance her storytelling and data expertise through the Conservation Planning specialization with a focus on Strategic Environmental Communication and Media.
