Assistant Teaching Professor

Bio

Carmen Galaz García is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara. At the Bren School, she teaches data science tools and skills and leads the capstone courses for the Bren Master of Environmental Data Science. Her teaching focuses on making technical subjects accessible to people of all backgrounds and creating a welcoming classroom focused on collaboration and growth where students are empowered by their learning experiences. For over a decade, she has actively supported, participated in, and led initiatives and programs promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in education.

Carmen joined the Bren School from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), where she worked as a data scientist analyzing remotely sensed data and developing learning modules for the NCEAS Learning Hub focused on big data analysis. Previously, she received her Ph.D. in Mathematics from UC Santa Barbara and her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Guanajuato in Mexico.
