Bio
Emily Miller earned her B.S. in Applied Mathematics from UC Santa Barbara in 2025, motivated to apply her quantitative skills to solving environmental challenges. As a Bren Environmental Leadership Fellow, she analyzed satellite data to track irrigation expansion across Sub-Saharan Africa. Her work earned presentations at the 2024 Annual Geospatial Union Conference in Washington, D.C. and the Mantell Symposium in Environmental Justice and Conservation Innovation.
At UCSB’s Water, Vegetation, and Society Lab, Miller is advancing this research toward publication. She also gained leadership experience as outreach officer for Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE), supporting over 130 undergraduates in STEM, and as founder of IV Recovery, a community initiative reducing marine waste through organized cleanups in Isla Vista.
Currently pursuing a Master's in Environmental Data Science, Miller is excited to explore the ways in which machine vision and AI can improve environmental modeling and strengthen predictive analytics. She is especially interested in applying these methods to issues of land rights, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management - areas where rigorous analysis can directly inform policy and create measurable impact.
