Bio
Emily earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences with high honors from UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2022. As an undergraduate, Emily spent one quarter in a field research course through the University of California Natural Reserve System (UCNRS) and another studying abroad in Costa Rica. Through these experiences, she learned the fundamentals of research and developed her love for hands-on field work. Her senior year at UCSB, she worked with a graduate student on fisheries governance research, which sparked her interest in social-ecological systems and interdisciplinary work.

As an undergraduate, Emily was a conservation intern with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) where she conducted wildlife surveys throughout Oregon. After graduating, she worked as an Ecologist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) at the Patuxent Research Refuge, collecting box turtle data for spatial and statistical modeling projects. She later switched her focus to microbiology and molecular biology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where she worked on bioremediation projects. While in the MESM program, Emily plans to specialize in Conservation Planning with an Environmental Communications focus. She hopes to apply these skills to approach environmental issues with a social-ecological lens to better inform environmental policy.
