Bio
Emma Bea Mitchell is an Environmental Data Science Master's student at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB. She graduated from the University of Redlands in 2022, where she combined three different programs to create a personalized major in Environmental Science, Policy and Justice. There, she took classes like Native American Environmental Issues; Food and Nature; and Statistical Analysis and Mapping, which introduced her to the power of data science. Her volunteer work at Juvenile Hall, the aquarium, and an urban farm, led to interaction with a wide diversity of people and environmental issues.
In her senior year, she studied abroad in Copenhagen where she found a strong connection between the environmental landscape of Denmark and Greenland, and the Inuit people that have been displaced and harmed through centuries of Danish policy.
Her experiences led Emma Bea to MEDS, where she will continue pursuing her passion of studying the intersection of humans and the environment by learning to utilize the power of computer programming to examine relationships between areas many look at as unrelated. In her career, she hopes to use data science to communicate and help repair the harmful impacts of dangerous environmental decisions on people and the environment.
