Jaslyn Miura is a Master’s student in Environmental Data Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Bren School of Environmental Science and Management.
Growing up in Hawaiʻi, Jaslyn was surrounded by a community and unique ecosystems that shaped her love for the environment. Learning about Hawaiian culture that is deeply intertwined with the land while also witnessing the effects of climate change on her home, inspired Jaslyn to obtain her B.S. in Environmental Science and Terrestrial Resource Management at the University of Washington. During her undergraduate studies, she completed her degree with a minor in Quantitative Science, participated in multiple data-collection internships, and completed a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship with the Pacific Island-Climate Adaptation Science Center. Through her fellowship, she assisted in research that spatially analyzed Hawaiʻi's biomes within a climate space, focusing on how biomes have shifted over time and identifying emerging biome types due to climate change. These experiences sparked her interest in integrating quantitative methods and technology to develop innovative, data-driven solutions to environmental problems.
After graduate school, Jaslyn intends to return to Hawaiʻi to work alongside her community to apply traditional ecological knowledge and data science to advance sustainable development and conservation.
