Kylie Newcomer graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2024 with a B.S. in Aquatic Biology with distinction. During her undergrad, Kylie worked as an intern for the Caselle lab, assisting on various coral reef and kelp forest marine ecology research projects. She completed an independent research thesis titled “Large Herbivores Facilitate Recovery on Coral Reefs”, which examined herbivore impacts and fishing pressure on coral reef benthic composition. Following graduation, Kylie was a scientific diver for the PICSO long-term, kelp forest monitoring program. She also assisted with the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program, which solidified her interest in fisheries management.

In addition to being a MEDS student, Kylie works as a Scientific Aid on the Southern California Fisheries Management Project for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. She plans to continue her education by pursuing a PhD in fisheries management and marine ecology, where she would like to utilize a broad diversity of tools in search of management relevant solutions to current challenges in the marine environment. In her free time, Kylie loves hiking, doing yoga, and of course, fishing.
