Bio
Currently pursuing a masters in Environmental Data Science, Lucian is committed to understanding how information can address environmental problems at their root. His undergraduate work in Environmental Studies and Science Communication culminated in a capstone project addressing artificial reefing of oil platform Holly in California in which he combined ecological data with community-facing communication. This interest in translating complex and challenging topics for broad audiences led to an internship at International Rivers where helped coordinate the International Day of Action for rivers. Thus sparking a passion for the intersection of data and action—how information can be transformed into tangible outcomes for environmental and social benefit, which led him to the MEDS program.
Outside of academics, Lucian is passionate about going outside and increasing accessibility to the outdoors especially for marginalized and underprivileged communities. Professionally, he has been a backpacking guide, ski instructor and surf instructor. Recreationally he's worked and lived on farms/ecovillages in Mexico and Brazil, loves to hike, climb and once spent a month in the woods building a log cabin.
This commitment to accessibility in the outdoors carries into his work with data: just as they believe outdoor experiences should be available to all, data science is a tool to create insights and solutions that serve not only academic and corporate audiences, but also communities who are often excluded from them.
