Matteo Torres is a graduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, pursuing a master's degree in Environmental Data Science. He recently earned his bachelor's degree in Biology from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).
Matteo's introduction to data science began during an internship with NOAA Fisheries. There, he collaborated on a project investigating the relationship between low-level Arctic clouds and extreme winter precipitation events in Alaska. His work involved processing LiDAR signals using a time series to generate statistical outputs related to precipitating clouds. During his undergraduate studies, Matteo was also a member of the CSULB Quantitative Ecology Lab. He contributed to research examining both the short- and long-term cognitive effects on the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaque population. Using linear mixed-effects models, he tested for associations between early-life adversities and social attention.
Matteo is eager to acquire new data science skills and address complex environmental issues. He is passionate about continuing his professional career in environmental data science, with a particular focus on ecology and conservation planning.
