Description
This workshop will address the basics of land use planning -- its purposes, structure, and tools, with a primary focus on California. It will promote the idea that land use planning can and should be informed by environmental science and management (e.g., regarding climate change, water supply, wildfire and other resilience concerns, air quality). Topics include: who makes planning decisions at the local, regional, and state levels; legal authority for land use planning and regulation; and fundamental planning tools (general plans, zoning, subdivision, etc.). The workshop will provide an opportunity for students to place their environmental and professional interests in the context of land use planning processes.
