Evert (Evie) Vermeer, a master’s student, graduated from Whitman College in 2016 with a degree in Economics-Environmental Studies. His capstone project evaluated the costs and benefits of New England’s Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. After graduating, he interned with an ESG investing firm before working for a forestry investor as an Associate Portfolio Manager. In 2020, Evie transitioned his career to pursue more conservation-oriented work and continue his education. He was drawn to the Bren School because of its myriad opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Specializing in Conservation Planning or Corporate Environmental Management, Evie hopes to research innovative methods of forest practices that emphasize community development, fire management and carbon sequestration. Additionally, he is the recipient of the Bren Sustainable Forestry Fellowship and hopes to combine his experience in finance and forestry with proven conservation methods. Evie currently works in nonprofit contracting and volunteers as a Board Director for 350PDX, a Portland-based environmental justice organization. In his free time, he loves to read, ski, bike, hike, and surf.
