Bio
Hello, my name is Hailey Veirs, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Environmental Data Science degree through the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management. I graduated in 2022 from the University of California, Irvine with a B.S. degree in Earth System Science (ESS). After taking courses in ESS, I was both appalled by the state of environmental issues, and fascinated by the complexity of Earth systems. This made me determined to pursue the ESS degree to do my part in helping communities affected by climate change. I completed my undergraduate degree with Dean’s Honors and Earth System Science Honors. As a part of completing ESS Honors, I wrote my Honors Senior Thesis under my mentor, Dr. Paulo Brando. My thesis involved satellite data, and used R to examine how soil moisture recharge in the Amazon Basin will evolve with climate change. I conducted additional Amazon-related research with Dr. Brando in spring and summer 2021. In this project, I used R to examine how fires in the Amazon changed over time. I hope to eventually work with the government to understand how climate change will affect vulnerable communities, and how to help protect those communities.
