Bio
Matthew McCafferty, a master’s student, graduated cum laude from the University of Cincinnati in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor in Political Science. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, where he served as an Intelligence officer and Armor officer around the world. During his time in the Army, Matthew witnessed firsthand poor land management strategies and a lack of oversight for natural resource management on the Department of Defense (DoD) landscapes. Matthew decided to attend the Bren school to learn about sustainable land management and population ecology to inform stronger land management practices. In preparation for Bren, Matthew got a Master of Natural Resources at the University of Idaho, focusing on fire ecology and restoration. At Bren, he plans on specializing in Conservation Planning. Matthew is interested in ecological inventory, monitoring, and the regulatory frameworks around natural resource management. He hopes to implement more sustainable practices in the DoD that conserve biological diversity among military landscapes.
