MESM 2021
Bio
Monica Gordon is a 2019 graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. At Spelman, she earned a BA in Environmental Studies and participated in a semester abroad at Queen Mary University of London. While studying at QMUL, Monica explored the city’s prominent green infrastructure projects and novel ecosystems. Her interest in natural and built environment integration inspired her research exploring the distribution patterns of environmental services provided by Atlanta’s urban forests. The principle “be of service to others” influenced Monica to pursue advocacy work advocating the benefits of environmental consciousness. With the Greening Youth Foundation, she worked to promote green literacy with under-represented youth and their families in Metro Atlanta. As a Louisiana native, she used a similar framework to educate Gulf Coast families about protecting themselves in the face of natural and anthropogenic environmental disasters. At the Bren School, Monica plans to specialize in Economics and Politics of the Environment with a focus in Strategic Environmental Communication. Professionally, she wants to work with organizations to develop sustainable communities while also preserving history and culture.
