Nolan Mitschke graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz (2020) with a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies, and a Concentration in Agroecology. During his undergraduate career, Nolan held an internship at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. In this role, he learned about growing techniques, plant care, and harvesting methods. Upon graduation, he worked at a plant nursery, and then at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences as a Research Assistant. At the Salk Institute, Nolan worked to optimize plant carbon sequestration by enhancing root system architecture and suberin production. He also implemented an integrated pest management system that now acts as a protocol and mandatory training system at all Salk Institute growing spaces. Nolan's research focused on improving the long-term health of local ecosystems and food systems through market-based solutions that benefit disenfranchised communities. Specializing in Environmental Policy at the Bren School, Nolan hopes to develop policy and resource networks for small and medium-scale farms to protect local communities and food systems. After completing his Master's, he plans to work in policy action to increase accessibility and financial support for small-scale farmers and community food systems.
