Something About Me

I am Rebecca Hernandez, a third-year, first-generation UCSB student pursuing a double major in Environmental Studies and Sociology, with a minor in Education. I am originally from Santa Rosa, California and am deeply passionate about helping marginalized communities battle environmental justice issues such as pollution, access to water, agriculture, etc. After graduation, I plan to pursue a master’s program abroad in Public Health, where I will gain new perspectives intended to help me address environmental justice issues at home. The Gilman International Scholarship afforded me the opportunity to study abroad in South Korea for the Fall of 2023 quarter while simultaneously interning at a digital marketing agency based in South Korea. In the summer of 2024, I utilized a Stapelmann scholarship to conduct research in Costa Rica on sea turtle conservation. I  have had the opportunity to travel to Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica, Korea, and Japan where I have enjoyed not only engaging with new people and cultures but sampling new cuisines as well.
