Bio
Yutian is a marine conservation scientist and first-year doctoral student at the Bren School. She received her Bachelor of Marine Biology degree from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego in 2019, and a Master of Environmental Management degree from the Nicholas School of Environment, Duke University in 2021. Her research interest largely focuses on sustainable fishery management and marine conservation, especially the interaction between human and marine megafauna. Previously, she had conducted research about mapping the exclusive small-scale fishing area for global fishing countries and estimating small cetacean bycatch from the Indian Ocean for India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
During her Ph.D. program, she hopes to combine her skills in spatial and data analysis to better understand the current threats to marine megafauna, especially in data-poor environments. She aims at working with both social and natural scientists to make more effective conservation strategies, with her ultimate goal to create benefits for both human society and the natural world.
