Join us for the Class of 2022 Communication Capstone Presentations on Friday, June 3, from 12:30pm - 2:00pm Pacific Time. Students in the Strategic Environmental Media and Communication focus area of the Master of Environmental Science and Management program prepare final capstone projects in the areas of science communication, public outreach campaigns, marketing/public relations research and strategy, and video production.

Program

This year we present seven dynamic projects for clients in the public, nonprofit, and corporate sectors:

Discoveries at Dangermond, Roshni Katrak-Adefowora, Kristin Gill, Kirsten Hodgson, Morganne Sigismonti

Through creation of an ESRI ArcGIS StoryMap, help to articulate the new discoveries made in the 3+ years since TNC acquired the preserve; to grow awareness and promote engagement and economic support from the local community.

Understanding Snow as a Resource, Halley McVeigh, Alex Gaynor, Caitie Reza

Create a short film highlighting snow monitoring and hydrologic research at CUES (Cold Regions Research and Energy Laboratory & UCSB), a shared snow research site utilized by UCSB, CRREL, and Desert Research Institute (DRI); highlight the importance of CUES research to motivate continued Congressional support.

Balloon Free Seas, Krista Finlay, Elena Ortiz, Lauren Skube

Reduce harmful balloon pollution in the Santa Barbara Channel through a consumer education and outreach campaign strategy focused on special events such as holidays and graduation.

Conserving Cougars through Connectivity, Meghan Fletcher and Anna Talken

Inspire and educate local communities about the importance of habitat connectivity for the conservation of mountain lions and other wildlife.

The Summer Trail & Climb Report, Matt Koller, Sam Fearer, Will Geiken

Develop a communication strategy based on research demonstrating climate change impacts on access to recreation spaces; stimulate advocacy for climate policy among “summer” sports enthusiasts.

Growing in the Ocean, Madeline McEwen, Laurel Wee, Janelle Gaun, Karla Garibay Garcia, and Annie Lovell

Create an educational film directed towards stakeholders in the California seaweed aquaculture industry that will help to eliminate some of the barriers to offshore aquaculture expansion on the West Coast.

Second-Homeowner Fuels Mitigation in Mammoth Lakes, Bri Baker, Kaley Dodson, and Aaron Kreisberg

Develop a communication strategy that will motivate second-home owners in the Mammoth Lakes area to take ownership of wildfire mitigation through political action and fuels reduction on personal property.
